2018–19 Duke Chapel Reads
Students, staff, faculty, and community members are invited to join Duke Chapel in reading The Very Good Gospel: How Everything Wrong Can be Made Right by Lisa Sharon Harper. The book explores God’s intent for the wholeness of all relationships in light of today’s headlines. It was recognized as the 2016 Book of the Year by Englewood Review of Books.
The book's author, Ms. Harper, will be the guest preacher at the Chapel's 11:00 a.m. service on Sunday, March 24, 2019.
Students and others interested in joining a reading group for the book should contact the Rev. Joshua Lazard, the Chapel's C. Eric Lincoln Minister for Student Engagement.
From Ferguson to New York to Germany and South Africa, Ms. Harper leads trainings and helps mobilize clergy and community leaders around shared values for the common good. A prolific speaker, writer and activist, she is the founder and president of FreedomRoad.us, a consulting group dedicated to shrinking the narrative gap in our nation by convening forums and experiences that bring common understanding, common commitment, and common action toward a just world. She is the author of several books, including: Evangelical Does Not Equal Republican...or Democrat (The New Press, 2008), Left Right and Christ: Evangelical Faith in Politics (Elevate, 2011), and Forgive Us: Confessions of a Compromised Faith (Zondervan, 2014).

This is the fourth year of reading for the Duke Chapel Reads . Through this effort, the Chapel aims to curate spaces for reflection and conversation, responding to recent national events and contemporary culture. Duke Chapel Reads contributes to the Chapel’s ongoing commitment to the intersection of theology and the (literary) arts through the C. Eric Lincoln Minister for Student Engagement, as well as our desire to connect with diverse communities.
