Celebration of Music Concert

Chapel Choir

The Duke Chapel Choir is the largest and most visible ensemble in the Chapel. The choir is a regular part of worship on Sunday mornings during the academic year, singing anthems and leading the congregation in hymns and liturgical music.

The Chapel Choir has toured extensively throughout the United States, Austria, China, the Czech Republic, England, Greece, Poland, Spain, and Turkey. Performance venues have included Carnegie Hall, the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, Washington National Cathedral, and St. Martin-in-the-Fields.

Auditions are held at the beginning of the academic year, as well as by appointment.

The Chapel Choir’s critically acclaimed performances of Handel’s Messiah have been an annual Advent tradition since 1932. Its spring oratorio concerts feature other major choral works. Recent spring concerts have included:

  • Bach: St. Matthew Passion
  • Duruflé: Requiem
  • Fanshawe: African Sanctus
  • Lauridsen: Lux Æterna
  • MacMillan: St. Luke Passion
  • Mozart: Requiem
  • Poulenc: Gloria
  • Tchaikovsky: Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom

The Chapel Choir is led by Dr. Zebulon Highben, director of Chapel Music.
